Book - The Big Fat Surprise
Greetings! This issue will more deeply acquaint you with the excellent book, The Big Fat Surprise. First is my take on it which follows here and then an interview with the author that gives you much of the info in the book.
When I was in med school one of the professors told us that 50% of what we were being taught was wrong. But the big problem was, they didn’t know which 50%. Now I see that the reason for much of this is that a lot data was contrived, not discovered by scientific study. So we learned it all, unquestioningly, and passed our exams and hoped for the best. Realistically it didn’t matter if you saw that something didn’t work, they said, because the standard of medical care is set by your State Medical Board and has nothing to do with outcomes. After all, hundreds of thousands of people die every year from medical treatments and life goes on as if nothing bad had ever happened. This occurs because the standard of care does not track outcomes. It follows opinions only of “experts.” They are the determiners of truth. And often the experts have opinions that are not backed up by scientific facts.
After reading The Big Fat Surprise what I realized is that what becomes health care practice and policy is not determined by scientific truth by experiment. It is determined by politics, economics and self-aggrandizement. We have been sold. Not because it works, but because there is a profit in it. And so from that, Madison Avenue is employed to brainwash the public, and special interest groups are formed to give scientific validity, and attack groups are formed to take out any protesters. And if you are researcher with a differing opinion you will not get grant money and your voice and your work will be silenced and suppressed.

Why do people get cancer?
Cancer cells have an altered metabolism. Otto Warburg identified the altered metabolism of cancer cells back in 1931 and received a Nobel Prize for his work. With this understanding we can improve the outcome in cancer patients even better and prevention is possible. Warburg pointed out that cancer cells can’t produce energy in the normal way and this results in having their cell membranes having low voltage. A healthy cell has a resting membrane voltage of about 70 millivolts. A cancer cell has a resting membrane potential of only around 30 millivolts. Because of the low voltage the cell can’t pull in potassium and push out sodium and this leads to an acid build up in cells. When this occurs, oxygen does not enter the cell in enough quantity and so the cell does not use oxygen to create energy.
When cancer cells lack oxygen they switch to fermentative metabolism. This means low energy (ATP) levels inside of cells...

The Cause of Cancer
It was Nobel Prize winner, Otto Warburg, who first identified that cancer cells have an altered metabolism. In 1931, this was a breakthrough and has led to a greater understanding of how cancer may be prevented and how the outcome in cancer patients can be improved. What Warburg discovered is that a long-term lack of oxygen allows for normal healthy cells to turn into cancer cells. How does this occur? Healthy cells function by the respiration of oxygen but when cells are deprived of oxygen they survive on the fermentation of sugar. This means low energy (ATP) levels inside of cells.
A healthy cell has a resting membrane voltage of about 70 millivolts. A cancer cell has a resting membrane potential of only around 30 millivolts. A healthy cell is continuously pulling in potassium and pushing out sodium in order to function properly but when the energy of the cell is diminished it can no longer do this which leads to a build-up of acid in the cell. This excess of acid means that oxygen cannot enter the cell, the cell has to look elsewhere for a source of energy, which it finds in the fermentation of sugar. The metabolism of cancer cells is approximately eight times greater than the metabolism of normal cells, hence the crave sugar so much in their quest to survive.
So, with this in mind, it becomes clear that boosting oxygen supply is essential in order to prevent cancer occurring, or as part of its treatment. Cancer cells are traditionally unpredictable, often appearing to have vanished after treatment, only to resurface later on. One reason for this is that conventional cancer treatments usually fail to address either the underlying cause of cancer or the conditions that cancer cells thrive in – e.g., lack of oxygen.

More often than not, the degeneration of health begins with poor nutrition. A nutrient is defined as a substance that the body can use for manufacturing energy or building its structure. When needed nutrition is insufficient in the diet, the working machinery of the body structure and metabolism break down.
Since the tissues in the digestive tract turn over the quickest, they often breakdown first if the nutritional building blocks are lacking. The first affected tissues are the internal lining cells of the small intestine that are required to first digest and then actively pick up and transfer the nutrients that arrive there to the blood stream. When nutrition is good, there will be new lining cells every 3 days. If the body doesn’t have the nutrients to make these new cells and the very complex structures on their border, the “old damaged ones” hang around, and they don’t function as well. They might only absorb half of what is present (They’re old! They move slow!). Also, since they have wear and tear damage, they will allow molecules into the body that should not enter. Bacteria, yeast, and partially digested food can come in between cells because the junctions break down. This is what is known as “leaky gut.” Additionally, with lower nutrient levels now being absorbed the enzyme levels in the stomach, small intestine and pancreas will fall. This leads to incomplete digestion and more nutrient deficiency.
And so based on this scenario we age and get sick.
