Boswellia: Incense, Anti-Inflammatory, and Brain Food
Frankincense, one of several ingredients in our premium Omega 3 Health supplement, is derived from the tree Boswellia Seratta. It has been used by ancient healers and sages for thousands of years, lauded for its effects on the body and mind. Traditionally, it was used as an oral or topical medicine, burned in incense, and valued greater than gold.
- A tree resin more valuable than gold?
- Maybe they knew something we’ve forgotten?
Brain Stimulating and Nerve Growing
Frankincense is most widely used as incense in religious ceremonies. It is easy to see why. Its aromatic smoke carries soft, uplifting tones, simultaneously comforting and almost mystical. But what is really in its vapors?
Frankincense is extremely rich in aromatic terpenes, a class of molecule that has recently become under more rigorous scientific examination for their protective, healing and stimulating effects on a wide variety of biological processes.
Notably, boswellia extract is now proven to stimulate the growth of neurons, enhance cognition, treat depression, and even alleviate learning and memory problems [2,3,4]. Inhaled through the nose, the most direct route to the brain, these active compounds light up our brains. In the context of a religious ceremony, it’s easy to see how this incense uplifts the spirit, promote, insight, and inspire greater awareness.
In the context of our complex and challenging lives, how might this ancient medicine help us learn better? Cope with stress more effectively? Adapt to our ever-shifting environments with more skill?
Boswellia is also well-known in traditional medicine for its ability to speed up healing and reduce infection. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, for example, it is used to increase circulation and speed up healing time bacterial and viral infections like colds and flu, effects which have now been verified in the laboratories of modern science
A Different Kind of Anti-Inflammatory
The most intensely researched area of boswellia extract properties are in its unique anti-inflammatory effects. Whereas most anti-inflammatory compounds act on COX2 enzymes, boswellia inhibits LOX enzymes, providing a new route to manage the destructive effects of inflammation. This inhibits the synthesis of leukotrienes, which play a role in a host of inflammatory diseases from arthritis to inflammatory bowel disease.
Boswellia is so effective as an anti-inflammatory, it is comparable with prescription NSAID drugs in its effectiveness . Only this tree resin has none of the side-effects, and no toxicity.
Because of this alternate pathway, it also creates an opportunity for synergistic effects with other anti-inflammatory compounds like curcumin, the active chemical found in turmeric, both of which are key ingredients in BodyHealth Inflam-Arrest, a power packed anti-inflammation product.
But now, you can get both of these together in our uniquely powerful Omega 3 Health. By combining nature’s most potent anti-inflammatories with the highest quality Omega 3s, Omega 3 Health is a powerful ally to naturally manage inflammation and promote your health and vitality.Sources:

Well Women Care
Are you one of the many thousands of women for whom a well woman exam is only an annual Pap smear and a manual breast exam? Then read on...
The biggest killers of women are:
- Cardiovascular disease ASVD (heart attack and stroke) and hypertension.
- Lung disease, obesity, diabetes and bone fractures.
A thorough Well Woman Exam should be able to reveal the pre-cursors to all of these. It should be an opportunity to ask any questions about issues which may be causing you concern, from fertility to cancer signs to inherited disorders. It should provide you with an annual report on your overall state of health, and not just give the “ok” to your breasts and reproductive organs. Identifying minor issues which may have the potential to develop into a serious illness is what a Well Woman Exam should do.
At LifeWorks, a Well Woman exam consists of a pap smear which is designed to detect premalignant and malignant cells in your cervix. Also included is a pelvic exam which checks the female organs and a manual breast exam which checks for lumps or abnormalities. We also include a Hemoccult test which looks for blood in the rectum and a body composition analysis which records percentages of: fat, muscle, bone, water, visceral fat, metabolic rate and physique rating.
Our Nurse Practitioner Sue has special focus on women's health.
She performs the Well Woman exams at LifeWorks; guiding female patients from puberty to post-menopause and helping them make informed choices about their individual requirements.
JENNIFER BAER, A.R.N.P. PATIENT TESTIMONIAL
I came to Jennifer Baer in May not only for a checkup but also to see if she could take care of a burping problem that I was having. For the last 16 or 17 months prior to my appointment with Jennifer, I had been constantly burping. That’s right – burping all of the time except when I was sleeping or eating. I had been to see my PCP numerous times and had blood work done, adhered to the fodmap diet for 8 weeks, eliminated all supplements and medications, etc. Nothing worked. The burping continued. As of one week before seeing Jennifer, my PCP’s latest thought was that my problem was stress. He was in the process of setting up an appointment for me with a mental health professional! During my session with Jennifer, she muscle tested me and found that I responded positively to a bacterium. She gave me a supplement and after taking it for 8 days, the burping stopped completely. If I had not seen Jennifer, I would be sitting in front of a mental health professional still burping! Thank you, Jennifer, for relieving me of this awful problem.

Most headaches can be resolved as soon as the cause has been correctly pinpointed. Up to one quarter of the population has a migraine headache at some time in their life and about 10 percent have them regularly. The classic migraine begins with a warming “aura” – flashing lights in one eye, blurring, blind sports, distortion of vision, and tingling of the arms or face. After about 30-60 minutes the headache begins, usually on one side but sometimes all over. It is a pounding, excruciating pain which usually lasts for four to six hours.
Attacks may be triggered by a number of things, including:
- alcohol in general and red wine in particular
- chocolate and caffeine
- strong emotional reactions
- changes in the weather
- hormonal changes
There are two other types of headache:
- Cluster headaches
People can get these headaches daily or several times a week. They last for about an hour and the pain is almost exclusively on one side of the head, often around or behind the eye.
- Tension headaches
Nearly everyone gets tension headaches. They are sometimes caused by involuntary tensing of the face and neck muscles over a long period, usually after concentrating hard or because of stress. The pain is a steady ache, which can last for hours or days, around the back of the head and neck, in the forehead, and around the eyes.
At Lifeworks we find the cause of your migraine headaches and set you free of them. For more information call LifeWorks at 727 466 6789.
