Heavy Metal Toxicity

What is Mercury Poisoning?

What is mercury poisoning and how can it be cured

Fish and shellfish in particular, are major sources of mercury.

High level exposure to mercury can lead to mercury toxicity which can affect many organs such as the brain, kidneys, lungs and the immune system. Symptoms may include foggy thinking, insomnia, headaches and a decrease in cognitive function.

Children may be exposed to the dangers of mercury poisoning through childhood vaccines, many of which contain mercury. This source of mercury may be responsible for the steady increase in the number of children who are diagnosed on the autism spectrum.

Where does Mercury Poisoning come From?

Exposure to mercury poison occurs on a daily basis and so it is important to recognize where mercury poisoning comes from. Mercury toxins often come from very seemingly-innocent sources, so being aware of these is an important step in avoiding them. Here are some of the most common sources of mercury poison:

  • mercury amalgam fillings
  • seafood (especially tuna)
  • cosmetics
  • pesticides
  • paint
  • plastics
  • fungicides
  • fabric softeners
  • adhesives
  • floor waxes/polishes
  • laxatives
  • suppositories
  • tattoos
  • hair dyes
  • batteries
  • thermostats
  • compact fluorescent light bulbs
  • mercury thermometers

Mercury Poisoning Symptoms

Mercury poisoning symptoms are varied and may include; autism, Alzheimer’s disease fatigue, chronic fungal infection, foggy thinking, headache, hypothyroidism, impaired judgment, insomnia, nervousness, loss of libido and speech disturbances.

Mercury Poisoning in Children

Mercury poisoning in children often begins with newborns who are born toxic with mercury poison which has passed to them from their mothers via the placenta and breast milk. Children are also increasingly exposed to mercury due to vaccines, many of which contain mercury.

In March, 2014, the CDC released the latest data on the number of children affected by autism in the US. The finding was that 1 in 68 children may have autism spectrum disorder. That is an alarming statistic since the rise in the incidence of autism is dramatic – seven years ago the statistic was 1 in 150. The most susceptible children appear to have a detoxification system that is slow in removing heavy metals like mercury and other toxins that have entered their bodies. With this slow detoxification system, the mercury poison levels accumulate and cause injury to the brain and other systems resulting in the child potentially being diagnosed with autism.

What can be done about Mercury Poisoning

The first thing that can be done about mercury poisoning is to find out what the mercury levels are in your body. At LifeWorks Wellness Center, urine analysis is done to establish the mercury levels present in a patient’s body. If the test results indicate that mercury poison is present, the practitioner will advise what can be done. The preferred protocol at LifeWorks for removing mercury from the body is chelation therapy.

Chelation therapy is effective in the removal of mercury poison from the body. Normally the practitioner will recommend treatments 2-3 times per week for a total of 10 and then re-evaluate to see if more are needed. Each treatment takes between 30-40 minutes to deliver.

Testing for Mercury Poisoning

Testing for mercury poisoning is done by a urine analysis, which will indicate the levels of mercury in the body. If the test shows high mercury levels, the patient will be advised to begin chelation treatment to relieve debilitating symptoms of mercury poisoning and helping to improve overall health.

Effective treatments for Mercury Poisoning

An effective treatment for mercury poisoning is chelation therapy, which is delivered to the patient intravenously. EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as an effective treatment for mercury poisoning. The EDTA is mixed with vitamin C, B complex, Magnesium and specific homeopathics.

Mercury poison accumulates in human tissue over a lifetime and so it is important to undergo an effective treatment of mercury poisoning so the body’s biochemical activity can be restored to normal and the effects of mercury poisoning can be minimalized.
