Video: Stage 3 Stomach Cancer – From Diagnosis to Clear Scans & Triathlon Return
In this video, Dr. Minkoff discusses a clinical case involving a 50-year-old triathlete who was diagnosed with stage 3 gastric (stomach) cancer after experiencing persistent abdominal pain and undergoing gastroenterological evaluation. Testing revealed cancer in multiple areas of the stomach, as well as involvement of nearby lymph nodes.
The initial recommendation from conventional oncology included extensive surgery to remove the stomach and affected lymph nodes, along with high-dose chemotherapy.
In this discussion, Dr. Minkoff explains how further diagnostic testing, including PET imaging and biopsy confirmation, was used to evaluate the extent of disease and guide a personalized integrative treatment approach.
Over the course of treatment and follow-up, repeat imaging reportedly showed no evidence of active disease, and follow-up endoscopy with biopsies confirmed no detectable cancer in the areas previously affected. The patient also returned to endurance training and resumed triathlon activity.

Goes to the gastroenterologist. Gets scoped.
Has gastric cancer in multiple locations, plus lymph nodes in the area.
So, this is stage three gastric cancer.
What was recommended for him? We’re going to cut out your stomach, we’re going to cut out the lymph nodes, we’re going to give you high-dose chemotherapy, and we’re going to keep our fingers crossed.
So, his coach, his triathlon coach, is a friend of mine, and she said, “Why don’t you come over and see Dr. Minkoff and see see if he can help you?”
So, we saw him.
We did a PET scan up front, it proved the disease that he had. Biopsies were positive.
After 6 months, the PET scan was clear.
He was rescoped by his gastroenterologist, who said to him, “I don’t even recognize your stomach. The inflammation and the cancerous areas are gone.” He biopsied three separate areas just to make sure. They’re all negative.
It’s been a year. He’s completely fine, and he’s doing triathlons again.
