Chronic Fatigue

Alternative Medicine & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Alternative medicine & chronic fatigue syndrome

The main symptom of chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is extreme tiredness or fatigue which cannot be remedied with sleep. Women are considerably more prone to CFS than men, especially if they are overweight or inactive. Allergies, depression and environmental factors may also play a role, along with stress which can compromise the immune system.

Diagnosing chronic fatigue can be difficult because the symptoms of CFS are very similar to those of other conditions and there is very limited testing available. For this reason, patients may be diagnosed with hypothyroidism, Lyme disease, lupus or other conditions in which fatigue plays a role.

Once it has been properly diagnosed, various treatment options are available. Conventional medicine offers solutions such as antidepressants and sleeping pills but many people do not want to face a potential lifetime of reliance on prescription medication and so turn to alternative medicine instead.

Common Chronic Fatigue Symptoms

The symptoms of CFS vary and depend on its severity.

Some of the more common symptoms include:

  • Extreme tiredness, which has lasted for about six months
  • Muscle ache
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Memory loss
  • Unrefreshed sleep
  • Sore throat
  • Tender lymph nodes.

Alternative Medicine Treatment for CFS

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can mimic other conditions and so it is important to test for things such as thyroid function, anemia, Lyme disease and so on. If these all look normal then a practitioner can be left with no answers for what may be causing the fatigue.

Treatment options for CFS in conventional medicine may include prescription sleep aids to try to alleviate the fatigue, antidepressants because people with chronic fatigue often become depressed at having to constantly deal with pain and pain medication to mask the pain.

Changes in lifestyle and diet may also be recommended such as reducing stress, carefully measuring physical activity and eating healthy foods.

At LifeWorks Wellness Center, before CFS treatment options are considered, the patient will be evaluated to determine the subtle imbalances that are probably occurring and causing the issues. A functional evaluation will be performed by the practitioner, to help to determine cause(s) of the exhaustion. These may include chronic virus, thyroid issues, adrenal exhaustion and even dysfunction at the cellular level where the “energy” that runs the body is produced.

The causes of chronic fatigue syndrome are very varied and can differ from person to person. For this reason, all treatment programs at LifeWorks are individualized based on what is needed.
