Forget Aging Gracefully, Age with Vitality! #521

Forget aging gracefully, let's age with vitality!

Message From Dr. Minkoff

The most anti-aging strategy that I know of is you making your body embrace effort.

What is effort?

“A vigorous or determined attempt.”

“Hard work of mind or body.”

“A serious attempt.”

“Doing something that is hard.”

And from my friend Gary Brecka, “Aging is the relentless pursuit of comfort.”  That is anti-effort.

The society would have you think that you should indulge yourself. That you earned your leisure and your comforts.

That health is what the propaganda health experts tell you, that your doctor knows best, that drugs heal and that effort and sweat are dangerous or undesirable.

How totally wrong that is.

Only through self-generated effort is there health and wellbeing.

For millennia bodies only survived if they were able to overcome heat, cold, hunger, and rabid animals or men. They evolved into machines that could overcome nature to survive.

Now it’s too easy. There is too much comfort. Too much food, too much sitting, too much TV, too much scrolling…

Two weeks ago, I did a Half Ironman Triathlon. That’s a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run. That takes effort.

The race was in North Carolina, and it was very cold. 44 degrees. For us Florida boys after a very hot summer, that’s freezing! There were 3000 participants there who had decided that effort was fun and spirit building.

I am 76 years old. Hardly anyone my age even shows up to something like that. They have all decided they are old and it’s too much effort. But if you want health and body survival it requires that you embrace effort, no matter your age.

I did well and was second in my age group. Effort produces morale and confidence and happiness.

I experienced all of the that in the over seven hours of my effort. You don’t have to be a triathlete to experience this. But if you expose yourself to cold and heat and hunger, and sprints, and lifting heavy things, and sweating, and sore muscles, just so the body can be made to work and get uncomfortable your spirit will soar and your body will get strong.

If our ancestors hadn’t done that, we all would not be here. That’s how our bodies got made.

Don’t be stupid and kill yourself – but that gives one a lot of latitude to be cause over your body. It will protest. So what. Tell it that it’s gotten soft and you’re going to toughen it up.

After a while it will begin to enjoy the effort and even prompt you to make it work even harder and pretty soon the limits will expand beyond your own expectations as exemplified by the following report…

I have a very close friend, another doctor, an icon in the health field, who has been suffering from ill health for many years after being poisoned 35 years ago with  a severe chemical exposure.

Doing what he could and with all he knew about health and supplements he just got weaker and weaker and stopped working and was mostly housebound. He’s 80 years old. A year ago, he got disgusted with himself and decided to join CrossFit thinking he’d either get better or die in the process.

At that point, he couldn’t do even one sit up or one push up. He just copied me on a success story he wrote to his CrossFit trainer.

“Yesterday as I was leaving the box at 6:30 am I was laughing at myself about how far I have come from my first day there.

Squat? Are you kidding?

A push up?

A sit up?

A single under?

They were all zeros.

Not to mention my weightlifting capacity. Zilch! Nada!

Yesterday with a 45 pound barbell I did thrusters (deep squats with barbell and thrusting that boy upwards to a good overhead arms extended lock out! Then 15 minutes of step ups! Then 70lbs, 10 reps of deep lunges!

Outrageous!

Its not the same body I am pushing around.

For 35 years I was frail after the pesticide poisoning, now I am no longer that man or that body.

I feel bright and excited and so proud of myself. I look in the mirror and I see muscles and definition when before I was a bag of skin and wrinkles.”

He told me, to a large degree that I had been his inspiration to greater physical fitness, and he decided to go for it before he died as a sad and hopeless man.

I told him in return…

“There is a juggernaut effect as you can see. Just the intention and attention and motion that you put into the body revives it and nurtures it and it responds. So proud of you!”

He thanked me and heartily agreed.

If you are still breathing, I am talking to you. Exert effort, for effort is life and through effort you produce health.

You will learn then that you run your body, and it will do what you want it to and your well being and health will soar.

Its one of those secrets that isn’t talked about enough.

Well now you know.

Go after it and make if fun.

Have a great week.

Yours in health,

David I Minkoff, MD
