Optimum Health Report #332

Dr. Minkoff - a doctor with tremenduous experience in treating various diseases

In This Edition:

Greetings all!

I want to call your attention to something that may have gone by your own radar or thought process. We are being so inundated with false news every day, but the history of false news is not new. Drug companies have been pedaling false news for decades and decades. They cherry pick research to make you think that what they say is really true. They pay scientists to organize statistics to make you think something is really working, and minimize the problems so you think there aren’t any and then sell billions in snake oil to unsuspecting people.

Drugs for prostate enlargement have sales in the billions of dollars per year. A popular one is Avodart. While it is true that Avodart will reduce prostate volume which can improve urinary function, it also raises blood sugar, A1C, and blood lipids.

Researchers from the Boston University School of Medicine identified these issues after following a group of men who had been prescribed Avodart for over three years. They published their findings in Hormones Molecular Biology and Clinical Investigations and indicated that doctors need to discuss these potentially serious side effects with their patients before prescribing them Avodart.

The body is a work of God and nature. It “knows” the natural kingdoms and responds to them to nurture and heal. When you stray off things can get dangerous. Drugs are basically dangerous chemicals that must be used with supreme caution and only when nothing else can help. But usually this is not needed if people take a little time to get advice from a practitioner who knows these subjects and can help.

Go natural. It’s the right way.

Have a great week.

Dr. David I Minkoff, M.D.

Kidney Stones

The kidneys are extremely important and play a vital role in our bodies.  They are responsible for filtering the blood and excreting the waste products/excess water in the form of urine.  The kidneys also control our body’s acid/base balance.  When blood and body fluids are too acidic or alkaline, the kidneys alter the acidity of the urine to restore the balance.

Kidney stones are quite common and are predominately found in middle aged people.  These stones are caused by excessive concentrations of various substances (primarily calcium), too concentrated urine, an infection or a lack of inhibitors of crystallization in the urine.  The calcium and uric acid crystalize into small lumps in the kidneys or ureters (the tubes that carry urine to the bladder) and are known as stones.

Stones rarely cause pain while in the kidney, but can be agonizing when they become dislodged and start to travel down or get stuck in the urinary tract.  This can cause extreme back pain in the kidney area and can sometimes spread to the abdomen and genitals.  Other symptoms include pain when passing urine and occasionally blood in the urine as well.

If you have kidney stones or would like to learn more, please contact our office at (727) 466-6789.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is recognized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  Symptoms of CFS are extreme tiredness or fatigue which cannot be alleviated with sleep.  Often, symptoms intensify after physical exertion which deters people with CFS from undertaking certain activities.

Woman aged between 30 and 50 are mostly affected by CFS.  However, those who are inactive or overweight are also at increased risk.  People who have allergies, depression, stressful lives and other environmental factors may also contribute to people being diagnosed with CFS.

Diagnosing CFS can be difficult for a physician because reliable testing is limited and the symptoms are very similar to those of other conditions.  For this reason, misdiagnosis can often occur and a patient may be told them have lupus, fibromyalgia, Lyme disease or hypothyroidism.  Treatment for CFS can only begin when a correct diagnosis is made.

Chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms can vary greatly.  Fatigue is the most common of all the symptoms, however it usually has to last at least six months before it can be diagnosed as chronic fatigue.  Other symptoms include:

  • Muscle ache
  • Memory loss
  • Headaches
  • Joint pain
  • Sore throat
  • Tender lymph nodes

Plaquex Therapy

What is Plaquex®?
Plaquex is a compounded medicine that contains polyunsaturated phosphatidylcholine (PC).  PC makes up all the cell membranes in the body as well as the transport vehicles for cholesterol, such as HDL and LDL.  Cell membranes consist of a double layer of PC molecules.

Embedded in between these molecules are receptors for signaling proteins such as hormones, neurotransmitters and many more.  Cholesterol molecules are also embedded in this layer to give the cell its stability.

As we age, the PC in the cell membranes become damaged by:

  • toxins,
  • detergents,
  • free radicals,
  • heavy metals,
  • smoking,
  • hypertension,
  • high blood sugar
  • high levels of stress hormones

With aging, the body is no longer able to produce enough PC to repair this damage.  Consequences of this damage are cardiovascular disease with plaque deposits in the blood vessels, liver damage, kidney damage and brain damage.  Besides making up all the cell membranes, PC also has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

Effects of Plaquex
Plaquex therapy restores cell membrane integrity and function which normalizes the cell metabolism.  This in turn helps to clear out plaque deposits and improve the function of all organs, including liver and kidneys.  It also improves the blood flow properties so blood can flow more easily without the use of blood thinners.  It also has an effect on important enzymes involved with blood lipids.  It thereby reduces LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and increases HDL cholesterol.

Therapeutic Uses
Plaquex has been studied in many countries since the 1950’s.  Plaquex is used to treat atherosclerosis.  It is given to patients suffering from angina pectoris whose coronary arteries contain plaque deposits.  It is also given to patients with carotid artery plaque and peripheral plaque in the legs causing claudication pain when walking.  Due to its effect on the liver and the kidneys, it is also used to improve the function of both these organs.

About Dr. David Minkoff, Medical Director

Dr. David Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then completed both a Pediatric Residency and a Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of California at San Diego. He worked at the University of California and Children’s Hospitals in San Diego as an attending physician in infectious disease while conducting original research on Ribaviron, a broad spectrum anti-viral agent to fight disease. He also co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine. In 1992, Dr. Minkoff’s wife Sue, a Registered Nurse, became interested in nutrition and health and began to go to lectures from some of the experts in the field. At the time, Dr. Minkoff was pretty fixed in his view of traditional medicine and it took a lot of convincing to get him to come to one of these lectures. After hearing Dr. Jeffrey Bland speak, Dr. Minkoff had a eureka moment and began pursuing the alternative field with a vengeance. Based on this new knowledge Dr. Minkoff and his wife set up a small clinic in 1997 to help some friends with their medical problems. What began as an experiment blossomed into Lifeworks Wellness Center, one of the most successful clinics for complementary medicine in the United States. In the process, he gained expertise in Biological medicine, integrative oncology, heavy metal detoxification, anti-aging medicine, hormone replacement therapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, neural and prolotherapy, homeopathy, and optimum nutrition. He studied under the masters in each of these disciplines until he became an expert in his own right. Dr. Minkoff is one of the most in-demand speakers in the field and wrote an Amazon best-selling book called The Search For The Perfect Protein. The demand for the products and protocols he discovered became a catalyst for founding BodyHealth.Com, a nutrition company that now manufactures and distributes cutting-edge nutritional solutions for the many health problems of today. Dr. Minkoff writes two free online newsletters, “The Optimum Health Report” and ”The BodyHealth Fitness Newsletter”, to help others learn about optimum health and fitness. Dr. Minkoff is an avid athlete himself and has completed 43 Ironman Triathlons. To keep his fitness maximal, he lives the lifestyle he teaches to others and tries to set an example for others, so they can enjoy a life free of pain and full of energy.
