The Truth About Red Meat & Cancer? – Optimum Health Report #376

A red meat steak. The link between red meat and cancer

Dear Readers,

Greetings all!

Mark Sisson did a very nice analysis of the newest “red meat is terrible and will kill you and don’t eat it hardly ever or both you and the planet will die” study. And the reason is you’ll die a very slow painful death from colorectal cancer.

But only if you’re a male, as buried in the fine print of the study showed that females had a lower incidence of colorectal cancer if they ate more red meat. Females, last time I looked were more than half of the population of earth.

Here’s the full study.

Now what about men? Well, as with many researchers who are trying prove a viewpoint that they already have, rather than discover a truth, they manipulate statistics to present a reality that is not there. They do this by using relative risk vs actual risk. Here is what they did…

They said your risk of getting colorectal cancer if you are a male was increased by 20%. That’s significant and would be something to really look at if it was actual risk.  But that is not what the study showed. It showed that subjects started with a 0.5% risk of getting bowel cancer. In those who ate the most processed meat and red meat, that risk increased from 0.5 by 20% to 0.6%! That’s relative risk. What bologna! (if you’ll forgive the pun).  Should you avoid good meat with the high nutritional value of minerals, iron, protein, vitamins, and essential fats for this miniscule increase in risk? Yes avoid all processed meats and hormone saturated, antibiotic raised and all the bad things that they do to beef, chickens, turkey, lambs, etc.

Sadly, many scientists have lost their way. Their data is used to create public policy and create food pyramids that make people sicker, not better. And to boot they push cereal grains as beneficial. I have found that for most of my patients, eating a Paleo type diet that includes safe meat makes them feel better and measurably healthier. We avoid grains, nightshades, dairy and all processed foods and try to eat as seasonally as possible with fruits and vegetables.

So if you’ve been worried about it, have a grass fed steak on me tonight and enjoy it guilt free. It won’t give you cancer any more than the whiff of gas fumes you got by filling up your car this morning.

Have a great week,

Dr. David I Minkoff, MD

Seven Nutrients Everybody Needs

“I have thousands and thousands of lab records of what people are often deficient in.  And if they are deficient in it then their body is missing things that it needs in order to work really well in the environment and to give them optimum performance.”

The Paleo Preventative to Feeling Fat, Sick & Tired

“You are what you eat” is an old adage but it has never been truer than today, especially here in the US.

“I’m feeling alive again, able to enjoy my kids, my wife and friends…”

I want to share with everyone my experience with Dr. Minkoff. A year ago my health condition deteriorated in a way I could never imagine. My problems started with extreme digestive issues, dizziness, fevers, hot flashes, pain, extreme tingling in my extremities, burning sensations and sounds in my head. Worse came one night when I stopped being able to sleep. Over the weeks my mental health was compromised and deteriorated to the point that I had very deep depression. I thought I was going to die.

During this time I was seen by a local doctor but visit after visit didn’t help me at all. Even knowing I was suffering, he could not diagnose what was wrong or help me. He even sent me to have a MRI thinking I may have a brain tumor, not thinking that going through that for the first time was going to compromise my mental health even more. The MRI broke my nerves and my mental health got worse.

At this point, I heard about Dr. Minkoff and his great references. The day of my first visit, Dr. Minkoff evaluated me with his techniques which were new to me. When he finished I felt he knew what he was doing and he would find the problem.

Dr. Minkoff prescribed some alternative, natural supplements and he ordered some lab tests. He looked me in the eye and told me there was “hope”. You cannot imagine how powerful that word was at that moment. It was the first medicine I received.

After that, Dr. Minkoff monitored my health at my frequent visits during which he added and modified treatments as my health improved and I regained my self-confidence. He also put me on the Paleo diet and I lost 35lbs…

Ten months have passed since the first visit and I’m feeling alive again, able to enjoy my kids, my wife and friends. I’m feeling even better than before with less weight. I wanted to thank you so much, Dr. Minkoff, for saving my life and bringing me back to my family. Thank you my friend.

May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month

The problem with Lyme disease is that it’s so very effective at mimicking other ailments, and it doesn’t always manifest the same way. A patient can have all the symptoms associated with Lyme disease, or very few. It’s not uncommon for Lyme disease to be misdiagnosed as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, lupus, mononucleosis, ulcerative colitis, ALS, Alzheimer’s disease, or fibromyalgia. Misdiagnosis can mean not getting treatment, or worse, getting treatment for the wrong ailment.

About Dr. David Minkoff, Medical Director

Dr. David Minkoff graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in 1974 and was elected to the “Phi Beta Kappa” of medical schools, the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honors Medical Fraternity for very high academic achievement. He then completed both a Pediatric Residency and a Fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of California at San Diego. He worked at the University of California and Children’s Hospitals in San Diego as an attending physician in infectious disease while conducting original research on Ribaviron, a broad spectrum anti-viral agent to fight disease. He also co-directed a neo-natal intensive care unit and worked in emergency medicine. In 1992, Dr. Minkoff’s wife Sue, a Registered Nurse, became interested in nutrition and health and began to go to lectures from some of the experts in the field. At the time, Dr. Minkoff was pretty fixed in his view of traditional medicine and it took a lot of convincing to get him to come to one of these lectures. After hearing Dr. Jeffrey Bland speak, Dr. Minkoff had a eureka moment and began pursuing the alternative field with a vengeance. Based on this new knowledge Dr. Minkoff and his wife set up a small clinic in 1997 to help some friends with their medical problems. What began as an experiment blossomed into Lifeworks Wellness Center, one of the most successful clinics for complementary medicine in the United States. In the process, he gained expertise in Biological medicine, integrative oncology, heavy metal detoxification, anti-aging medicine, hormone replacement therapy, functional medicine, energy medicine, neural and prolotherapy, homeopathy, and optimum nutrition. He studied under the masters in each of these disciplines until he became an expert in his own right. Dr. Minkoff is one of the most in-demand speakers in the field and wrote an Amazon best-selling book called The Search For The Perfect Protein. The demand for the products and protocols he discovered became a catalyst for founding BodyHealth.Com, a nutrition company that now manufactures and distributes cutting-edge nutritional solutions for the many health problems of today. Dr. Minkoff writes two free online newsletters, “The Optimum Health Report” and ”The BodyHealth Fitness Newsletter”, to help others learn about optimum health and fitness. Dr. Minkoff is an avid athlete himself and has completed 43 Ironman Triathlons. To keep his fitness maximal, he lives the lifestyle he teaches to others and tries to set an example for others, so they can enjoy a life free of pain and full of energy.
