Acid Reflux / GERD
Acid Reflux / GERD occurs when the contents of the stomach back up into the esophagus, resulting in a variety of symptoms such as heartburn, reflux and even chest pains.
In a healthy person, the valve between the esophagus and the stomach closes when there is enough acid in the stomach and can remain open when there is not. This creates heartburn, which is widely considered the first symptom of acid reflux or gastro esophageal reflux disease (GERD). It can result in a constant chest burning or warming sensation.
As people age, or when they are on medication this can also reduce the amount of stomach acid and you can get acid reflux symptoms. Additionally, there can be an infection in the stomach which can also cause these symptoms.
Acid reflux symptoms are not uncommon. Over 60% of the US population have grown accustomed to experiencing a reflux related symptom over the last 12 months. Even so, this is not a normal or ideal healthy condition. When it happens regularly over a period of 2 to 3 times in a week with no visible relief, then you likely have acid reflux or GERD.
It is not uncommon for patients seeing a conventional doctor to simply be prescribed an over the counter antacid, acid blocker or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). These class of drugs work against the symptom but often leave the underlying cause left untreated.
Making matters worse is the fact that these class of drugs were never intended for long term use according to the drug manufacturers and can lead to negative side effects such as increasing the risk of spinal, forearm/wrist, and even hip fracture in chronic users. Also without adequate acid, your body will not digest adequately and this can lead to malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies. A lack of adequate acid can also increase the risks of food poisoning and infections. Compounding matters is that with the symptoms suppressed by the drugs, you are less likely to be aware of the damage that is still occurring as the acid continues to do damage to the esophagus, which can lead to conditions such as Barrett’s Syndrome and esophageal cancer.
