Billionaire & Entire Family Tests Positive for Lyme Disease

British billionaire John Caudwell, founder of Phones 4U, recently went public with the devastating discovery that his entire family—himself included—has been diagnosed with the masquerading Lyme disease. Caudwell’s son Rufus was the first to be diagnosed. For ten years, Rufus endured panic attacks, public anxiety, and travel sickness. Doctors could not pinpoint a cause. Most assumed his symptoms were related to his mental health, and after years of suffering, Rufus was finally diagnosed with Lyme disease.

Only a couple of months after Rufus was diagnosed, Caudwell announced on social media that he himself, along with his first wife Kathryn and his two daughters Rebekah and Rhiannon, all tested positive for the debilitating disease.

Why Is Lyme Disease Becoming a Widespread Issue?

Outdated statistics report 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with Lyme disease every year. In 2013 the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) came forward with a startling new number: there are between 300,000 – 440,000 new cases of Lyme disease in America every year. That’s ten times the previous report. Many experts agree even this number is far too small and that the real number of Lyme Disease cases could be as high as 10x this number, since only 1/10th of Lyme disease cases are even reported. In fact it is estimated that as many as 1% or more of the population in some eastern states are affected with Lyme. This confirms the epidemic we are seeing in our clinic every week.

Lyme disease is critically misdiagnosed. In the past, only cases reported by doctors were even considered in statistical reports. Yet, multiple health insurance claims, laboratory analyses, and self-reported cases have raised the curtain on this notably common ailment.

Lyme disease is becoming a widespread issue not because of how many people are affected by the disease, but because of how many of those afflicted with the disease are not properly diagnosed. The CDC reports only 1/10th of Lyme disease cases are even reported.

Why is Lyme Disease so Often Misdiagnosed?

The disease plagues thousands every year, but the symptoms from one person to the next can be drastically varied.  The telltale sign of Lyme is the bull’s-eye rash that presents itself days after the tick bite, but 25% of Lyme carriers do not experience a rash at all.  Body aches, fever, and chills are dismissed as symptoms of the flu. Patients are sent home with doctor’s orders of rest and plenty of fluids.

Like the Caudwell family, patients can go years without the slightest notion as to what might be the cause of their ailments. Even if a test is conducted after the onset of early symptoms, the results often turn up negative. It can take up to two months before antibodies show up in a blood test.

For some, early symptoms do not appear at all. The dormant disease infects the lymph nodes and the bloodstream, and soon the joints, nervous system, and possibly the heart are impaired. When the disease begins to take over in other areas of the body, atypical to the first stages of Lyme, it becomes even more difficult to properly diagnose the disease.

Many afflicted with Lyme have carried the disease for many months, and sometimes, years. The longer it is left untreated, the harder it is to diagnose.

When the third stage hits, it’s near impossible to pinpoint. Symptoms start to mimic Rheumatoid Arthritis, Alzheimer’s, Fibromyalgia, Parkinson’s, Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, and a handful of mental health disorders.
