How Do Thyroid Problems Start?
The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate your body’s metabolism, affecting everything from your heart rate to your body temperature. When this gland is not functioning correctly, it can lead to a host of health problems. But how do these thyroid problems begin?
The thyroid gland is responsible for producing two primary hormones: triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4). These hormones are essential for the proper functioning of every cell in your body. When the thyroid gland produces too much or too little of these hormones, it can lead to hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, respectively.
Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid, can cause symptoms such as rapid heart rate, weight loss, nervousness, and irritability. On the other hand, hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, can lead to fatigue, weight gain, depression, and sensitivity to cold.
Several factors can contribute to the onset of thyroid problems. These include autoimmune diseases, certain medications, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, and iodine deficiency. In some cases, thyroid problems can also be hereditary.
Autoimmune diseases, such as Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease, are among the most common causes of thyroid problems. These conditions occur when your immune system mistakenly attacks your thyroid gland, leading to inflammation and impaired function.
Certain medications, such as lithium and amiodarone, can also affect your thyroid’s ability to produce hormones. Similarly, radiation therapy to the neck area can damage the thyroid gland, leading to hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism.
Thyroid surgery, which is often performed to treat thyroid cancer or large goiters, can also lead to thyroid problems. If the entire thyroid gland is removed, you will develop hypothyroidism and need to take thyroid hormone replacement therapy for the rest of your life.
Iodine deficiency is another common cause of thyroid problems. Your thyroid gland needs iodine to produce T3 and T4. If you don’t get enough iodine in your diet, your thyroid gland may enlarge to try to capture more iodine, leading to a condition known as a goiter.
