What Are the 5 Thyroid Tests?
To diagnose thyroid disorders, medical professionals rely on a series of tests. Understanding these tests can empower you to take control of your health and make informed decisions about your treatment options. Here, we’ll delve into the five key tests that are used to assess thyroid function.
1. TSH Test: The thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test is the most common thyroid test. It measures the level of TSH in your blood, which is the hormone responsible for telling your thyroid to produce and release thyroid hormones. High levels of TSH can indicate an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), while low levels can suggest an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).
2. Free T4 Test: This test measures the level of free thyroxine (T4) in your blood. T4 is one of the hormones directly produced by your thyroid. A low level of free T4 often indicates hypothyroidism, while a high level can suggest hyperthyroidism.
3. Free T3 Test: Similar to the free T4 test, the free triiodothyronine (T3) test measures the level of T3 in your blood. T3 is another hormone produced by your thyroid, and it’s even more potent than T4. Abnormal levels of free T3 can also indicate a thyroid disorder.
4. Thyroid Antibody Test: This test checks for the presence of thyroid antibodies in your blood. These antibodies can attack your thyroid, leading to autoimmune thyroid disorders like Hashimoto’s disease and Graves’ disease.
5. Thyroid Ultrasound: While not a blood test, a thyroid ultrasound is often used to check for physical abnormalities in the thyroid, such as nodules or inflammation. This can help diagnose conditions like thyroid cancer or thyroiditis.
